Derek Sloan Campaign Update Oct. 12 2019

October 12, 2019

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! It's a great time to remember how blessed we are to live in this beautiful area, and in this beautiful, strong and free country.

Only 9 days until Election day and we're still knocking! We've been to every community across the riding, but we'll be back and forth across H-L&A this week again, touching base with as many voters as we can! Pushing forward and hoping for that big blue wave!

Many thousands of kilometres have been travelled across this beautiful (and huge!) riding.  What a privilege it is to visit every corner of H-L&A and get to meet thousands of residents in their homes!  We still have a few signs left--if you would like one for your property, email us at info@electSloan.ca, or order one online at www.electsloan.ca/lawn_sign

Had the opportunity to meet with Don Maracle, Chief of the Mohawks of Bay of Quinte. Thanks for the great conversation!

As I've knocked on doors over the last 9 months, and met with municipal leaders in every community, I've heard about the need for better and more efficient infrastructure spending in the riding.  I've also heard about the need for better internet and cell coverage.  Living in a rural area myself, I fully agree!  I also know that improvements in these areas will lead to better educational and business opportunities, and a brighter future for H-L&A.  The bottom line is that we need a government in Ottawa that respects rural communities, and that will put them at the centre of decision-making about their ridings!

A friendly reminder that advance polls are open across the riding this THANKSGIVING WEEKEND, Oct 11, 12, 13, & 14 from 9:00am to 9:00pm.  This is one of the best ways you can help our Campaign--if we know you've already voted, we can focus on getting other supporters to the polls.

I hope that many of you will be gathering with friends and family this weekend, and giving thanks for our many blessings. How about making voting a family affair and bringing along your kids or grandkids to the polls? A democracy like ours depends on your participation, your voice. Getting kids involved in the process early is educational, and will help create a brighter future for this riding, and for our country.

The location of your advance poll is on the voter card you should have received in the mail. You can also search by postal code at https://www.elections.ca/content2.aspx?section=vote&document=index&lang=e

Support for Families in H-L&A!

As you gather with family & friends this Thanksgiving weekend, please share with them our Conservative plan to support families in Hastings-Lennox & Addington.  In addition to maintaining the Canada Child Benefit (which was a Conservative idea in the first place!), a new Conservative government will also:

• Invest $50 million in a NATIONAL AUTISM STRATEGY;
• Make E.I. benefits for new parents TAX-FREE;
• Increase social transfer payments by at least 3% every year, helping provinces fund better childcare & early learning;
• Introduce EI ADOPTION LEAVE BENEFITS & boost the Adoption Expense Tax Credit;
• Reinstate the FITNESS & ARTS tax credits (with extra for parents of children with disabilities); and
• Provide a universal tax cut–with the largest benefit going to those making less than $47,630!

IMPORTANT INFO for travellers and hunters

In the 2015 federal election, the margin of victory was only 300 votes.  This means that to ensure a Conservative victory on Oct. 21, we need every one of our supporters to vote--including those who may be travelling or hunting this fall.  Can you please ensure your friends have this information on hand?  Perhaps you know someone who would vote, but needs a ride to a returning office or an advance poll--please let us know or offer a ride if you are able to.  And send us a picture of the proceedings if you’re so inclined!  Email info@electsloan.ca or message us at www.facebook.com/ElectSloanHLA.

Returning offices are open and YOU CAN VOTE for Derek now, even after the official advance polls dates.

Pictured below are the addresses, phone numbers & hours of the returning offices in H-L&A.

Hunters should also take special note of the Liberals’ recently-announced gun control scheme.  Please share the following Statement with your friends who may be concerned about the Liberals’ plans!

The Liberals have announced a new plan to punish lawful rural gun owners

In 2018 the Liberal government brought in Bill C-71, its so-called updated Gun Control laws. At the time, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale stated that the reason for this move was due to the fact that a “troubling spike in gun crime demands some sort of legislative response.” The legislative response turned out to be an attack on law abiding gun owners with even more restrictive rules and regulations.

During this election, the Liberals have once again announced that they have decided to punish lawful rural gun owners for urban gang-related crime that is largely carried out with illegal firearms stolen or sourced from the United States. We want the Liberals to explain how strengthening gun laws for law-abiding gun owners with legal firearms will stop crime that is carried out by criminals using illegally obtained firearms.

By contrast, the Conservatives have a real plan to tackle gun and gang violence.

A new Conservative government will crack down on gangs, equip police, and enact gun laws that target criminals. They will:

  • End Automatic Bail for gang members;
  • Identify Gangs in the Criminal Code;
  • Revoke parole for gang members;
  • Create tougher sentences for ordering gang crime;
  • Create new sentences for violent gang crime;
  • Ensure that possessing a smuggled firearm means prison time;
  • Create a CBSA Firearms Smuggling Task Force;
  • Ensure firearms don’t fall into the hands of dangerous individuals;
  • Provide new funding to fight gangs;
  • Create a police infrastructure grant program;
  • Ensure better information sharing to solve gang crimes;
  • Create stronger background checks for gun licences;
  • Provide more support to keep young people from joining gangs; and
  • Make prison time meaningful.

Last Tuesday evening, I was pleased to attend an All-Candidates meeting in Bancroft.  Great questions and a really engaged crowd!  Thanks so much to the organizers, my fellow candidates, and to all who attended.

We are really looking forward to the upcoming All Candidates meetings!  Please come on out to learn more about all of the candidates, and in support of a better future for H-L&A.

I hope to meet every one of you over the course of the campaign!  If you’d like to learn a bit more about me, and why I’m running, check out www.electsloan.ca/about_our_candidate, and please share this with your friends.

A big focus of our campaign is making life more affordable for you.  This is crucial to a brighter future for HLA, and to helping you get ahead! According to a recent article by John Ivison of the National Post, “affordability concerns are clear and present for the more than half of Canadians who live paycheque to paycheque.”

He goes on to say, “A new poll...suggests 53 per cent of Canadians have little disposable income, 57 per cent are carrying credit card debt and 38 per cent of 35-54 year- olds have no retirement savings.”

Yet the Liberals want to significantly increase spending, which will increase taxes for these same people. If you agree that this is a problem, I encourage you to get involved with our campaign, to vote early, and to vote for me, Derek Sloan!

Our Napanee office at 21 Dundas Street W is up and running! We will be open Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sat. from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Drop in to say hello to our wonderful office manager Karen Hampel, and our team of volunteers!

During the election campaign, our Marmora location (1 Forsythe St.) will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays to serve voters in Hastings County, and we will also be spending time in Bancroft on Wednesdays. If you’d like to set up a meeting with us in Bancroft, email info@electsloan.ca.

On the Trail this week

We'll be canvassing in multiple locations next week - if you can help, email us at info@electSloan.ca or call us at (343) 645-5492. No experience is necessary; we will give you training on our simple canvassing strategy, and you will be paired up with an experienced campaigner. All are welcome, and remember, “Victory is Knocking”! We are also starting our telephone canvassing campaign–if you can help us by phoning prospective supporters, please contact us.

Join our fantastic team!

We’d love to have you join us, helping H-L&A to get ahead! This is crucial to turning this riding blue on Oct. 21.  We need door canvassers, phone canvassers, lawn sign distributers (we need one in each municipality), election day & advance poll scrutineers and volunteer drivers.  This is a winnable riding, but we will only succeed with an army of volunteers!  To sign up, drop by our Napanee office (21 Dundas St. W.), email us at info@electsloan.ca, call 343-645-5492 or sign up online at www.electsloan.ca/volunteer

Help us get our message out!

It's important that friends and supporters of our campaign and our party spread the news about what we are doing. As the election gets closer, it becomes increasingly challenging to cut through the noise in the press and social media. You can help us by following our campaign on social media and reposting our material on your own accounts so your followers get our message. You can also help make sure our side is heard in the debate by writing letters to the editor in your local press. If you do write something or see something in local media that we can share, email us a link at info@electsloan.ca

Help us meet people in your community!

During the campaign, I'll be travelling around the riding, holding "meet & greets" in as many communities as I can. You can help!  If you would like to host a small get-together to provide an opportunity for me to meet your friends and neighbours, or know a place in your community where we can meet local residents, send us an email at info@electsloan.ca

Update from the national party

Here’s a list of policy commitments so far from Andrew Scheer--plans to help you get ahead. This list grows almost daily--check out www.conservative.ca for updates!

  • Scrap the Trudeau Carbon Tax, lowering the cost of everyday essentials like gas, groceries, and home heating.
  • Introduce the Universal Tax Cut, saving an average couple $850.
  • Commit $50 million for a National Autism Strategy.
  • Introduce EI adoption leave benefits for adoptive parents and boost the Adoption Expense Tax Credit.
  • Take the GST off home heating costs, saving your family $107 every year.
  • Introduce the Green Public Transit Tax Credit, saving a family of four who take transit up to $1,000.
  • Make maternity benefits tax-free, putting up to $4,000 back in the pockets of new parents.
  • Introduce the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, allowing parents to claim up to $1,000 for sports activities.
  • Introduce the Children’s Arts and Learning Tax Credit, letting parents claim up to $500 for arts and learning programs.
  • Expand the Age Credit, benefiting the lowest income Canadians the most and giving a senior couple up to $300.
  • Boost the RESP matching by 50 per cent, helping parents get more for their kids’ education.
  • Cut $1.5 billion in corporate welfare to the likes of the Irvings, Loblaws, Blackberry and others. That money should be spent on essential spending like healthcare, and on returning money to your bank account!
  • 25% cut in foreign aid. We will eliminate funds to middle income countries and hostile regimes, while continuing to support the poorest countries in the world.

The full Conservative platform has now been released--check it out at www.conservative.ca/andrew-scheer-reveals-his-plan-for-you-to-get-ahead/. Conservatives will focus on policies that will put more money in your pocket and that will help ordinary Canadians. The SNC-Lavalin scandal has highlighted Mr. Trudeau’s focus on helping Liberal insiders, and on punishing those who criticize his actions: it’s time for a Conservative government that works for you, and helps you get ahead!

Join the Victory Club!

We are thrilled to announce that we now have over 50 Victory Club members!!  Join us today to help us reach our next level target of 100 members. Victory Club is a program that goes a long way towards reaching our fundraising target and giving us the necessary tools to run a successful campaign. Our target can be reached if only 250 people donate $400.  A $400 donation costs you only $100 out-of-pocket after the generous tax credit! And remember, every eligible member of your household can donate separately and join our Victory Club. We recently had a husband and wife donate $400 each--$800 for the campaign and only $200 out-of-pocket for them! See below for donation info.

Donations

As always, we are grateful for your support for this Campaign and we will keep working together to spread our positive Conservative vision for Canada and for Hastings—Lennox & Addington. Donations of any amount are always welcome: When you give to our local Conservative association (up to the 2019 max. of $1600), that money stays right here in HLA, and up to 75% of your donation could be eligible for a tax credit on your 2019 tax return.

We can accept donations from Canadian individuals only (not from corporations or businesses). Cheques should be made payable to Derek Sloan Campaign and sent to PO Box 111, Madoc, Ontario, K0K 2K0. We cannot accept cash or credit card information through the mail; however, you can donate online at: www.electsloan.ca/donate.

With thanks,

Derek Sloan
